Cotswold View Disc Golf Course, Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England

Cotswold View Disc Golf Course is near Charlbury in West Oxfordshire and is part of a 54 acre Caravan and Camping Park. The Disc Golf Course meanders through 30 acres of old mixed woodland and was designed by Disc Golf UK - Richard Hatton (Disc Golf UK design).

We stayed on the campsite (Cotswold View Caravan and Camping), which is well equipped for motorhomes/campers, tents and they have pods for rent. There is also Bed and Breakfast and Holiday Cottages (https://www.banburyhillfarm.co.uk/.) So lots of options to stay over and play more!

There is a lovely and very popular cafe The Old Shed, on site which serves some really nice breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea options. All of this is adjacent to the course, which is pay to play and there is ample parking on site. You pay at the campsite reception and the price (click on this link (Disc Golf) includes a free rental disc per person, if you don't have your own. There is also an annual membership which gives you unlimited golf. As we were staying on the campsite we played for free.

Campsite and woodland course view

The are 3 Tee off points made of bark chip on this course. The Yellow course is a Par 27 Beginners course with just 9 holes. This is a fun introduction to disc golf in the woods. There are 18 Holes with White Tees, Par 58 and the Blue Tees, Par 57 4810ft. We decided on the White Tees. Each hole is signed very well at all tee off points.

If you want a lovely walk in beautiful woodland whilst throwing a disc, then Cotswold View DGC is the place to come and learn how to throw those "around the trees" shots. Heavily wooded for most of the course, you meander through a gorgeous tree-scape on well trodden paths. Be very mindful as campsite users as well as users of the cafe do take casual walks through these woodlands. You also get new players trying the game for the first time. So be careful when you are throwing and also when others are throwing. I only say this because there are so many trees that discs can fly in any direction when they come into contact with trees.

The course was as we remembered from the first time we had come across it 2 years ago. It was good to be back and to be able to play with some disc golf knowledge this time. Having said that, it still takes some working out how to negotiate the fairways which have been created using the natural planting of this woodland. We enjoyed trying out the technique of hyzers (an angle of release where the outside edge or left side of the disc is tilted downward for a right handed backhand thrower) and anhyzers (an angle of release where the outside edge or left side of the disc is tilted upward for a right handed backhand thrower) to get around trees and into spaces for our next shot. Yes for the person reading this who hasn't played Disc Golf before, there is a whole new language to learn in disc golf as well has how to play!

We played a couple of rounds after some messing around and enjoyed yet another type of course to those we had experienced so far. I don't think there is another course quite like this in the UK, so heavily wooded.

I do feel that my forehand throw did benefit me in this environment, as I felt able to thread shots through the tight gaps with better control than when I do backhand. In fact ,I'm not sure that I did much backhand on this course at all, apart from putting, when I think back. The course certainly challenges your drives as well as upshots in trying to find the line that will suit your style of throw and of course your sight line depending on where you end up, en route to the basket.

Cotswold View is definitely a course everyone should visit. It will challenge you, you may come out with some expletives as your discs whizzes off in the wrong direction after arguing with a tree, but it will help develop a shorter technical game whilst having fun in the woods.

So 3 courses in 9 days and we are heading home. The courses were all different to each other and we have made some new friends. This was a good trip and has given us a taste for more adventures. We shall have to start thinking about how we could put together another tour of courses and take in some more of what the UK has to offer.
